Who this guide is for

The first 100 days are counted from the day you bring your puppy home, not from the day they were born. The guide is written around a young puppy arriving at about eight weeks old, with the timeline laid out week by week from pickup. If yours is a little older when you collect them, the first chapters still apply and the timeline simply starts later, so ask your vet how it fits your puppy’s age. Adopting an adult dog? Start with DOG 220, the behaviour guide.

Is this you this week?

The first nights

Where should the crate go? (Your bedroom, for the first stretch.) What goes in it, and what never to use it for.

Toilet training

The signs your puppy needs to go, a practical routine, and why punishment after the fact doesn’t work.

The first vet visit

What a good first appointment covers, and the vaccine series explained in plain English.

Taught by two very opinionated professors

Professor Mochi

“I know, I know — you want to show them off immediately. Don’t. A boring first evening is a successful first evening. Save the party for week two.”— Professor Mochi, Department of Dog Studies

Doctor Agatha

“Wondering why the puppy who was perfectly calm all afternoon falls apart the instant your extended family arrives for a ‘quick meet and greet’? … Whose idea was the party, again?”— Doctor Agatha, visiting from Cat Studies
